6 Slimy Real Estate Agent Tactics Revealed

It's happened to all of us, we're trying to buy a house, and one agent will not stop calling. Are they that desperate for our business? Do they think we don’t know what they’re up to? As it turns out, some agents use deceitful tactics to close the deal. Here are some tricks you need to be aware of before buying your next property.

Creating Unnecessary Hype and Urgency

Real estate agents ensure their listing is not dead on the market. A few will use unconventional methods to present a property. They will come with what is unpopularly known as "sealed bids," whereby they will tell you that there are other interested parties and if you want the property, you need to make a higher offer than what is on the table. This technique creates a sense of urgency and competition, leading potential buyers to make irrational decisions.

Fake Listing

Predatory real estate agents often use unverified listing sites or social media networks to create an ad for an uncharacteristically cheap estate at a popular location to lure potential bidders. Once they get your number and email, they bombard you with other properties that are much more expensive. This is a real estate agent's way of fishing for new clients. They will also use your personal information to try and sell you other products like home insurance.

The Bait and Switch

Some real estate agents use this technique to get rid of houses that have been on the market for too long. They will take a picture of a well-maintained property and use it for advertising a run-down house. Once you've expressed interest, they will tell you that the property in the ad has already been taken, but they have others that fit your budget and needs.

Low Balling

This may be the oldest trick in the book, yet many fall for it every day. An agent will tell you that your house is only worth a fraction of its worth. They do this in the hopes that you will list with them out of desperation.

The High-Pressure Sale

Have you ever felt like you were being pressured into buying a product? Some low-life real estate agents use high-pressure sales tactics to get people to sign on the dotted line. They might say things like, "This is your dream home, don't let it slip away" or "If you don't make an offer now, someone else will scoop it up."  Never fall for such tactics; always take your time to make this crucial decision.

While most real estate agents don’t use these tactics, it’s always best to be aware of them just in case.
